William Carlos Williams nasceu em Rutherford, New Jersey, em 1883 e faleceu em 1963. Licenciou-se em medicina e especializou-se em pediatria na Universidade de Leipzig. Exerceu medicina em Rutherford até 1951. Entre os seus amigos contam-se Marcel Duchamp, Francis Piccabia, T. S. Elliot, Wallace Stevens, Marianne Moore e Ezra Pound, este último conhecera enquanto tirava o curso.
Em Maio de 1963 ganhou postumamente o Pulitzer Prize pelo Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems (1962) e a Gold Medal pelo Poetry of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Os trabalhos mais importantes foram: Kora in Hell (1920), Spring and All (1923), Pictures from Brueghel and Other Poems (1962).
